I was happy that I have another chance to test my bike and that I got a sponsor who covered the entire race costs for me. In contrast to last year, we traveled with a huge composition, truck + trailer. The sponsor was very special. He is my boss Dave with his company AirCrafters.
I improved every detail of my bike significantly. And it was very important that my crew members (Dave Saylor and Jacek Kesy) took the time to play with my bike during the time between BM 2006 and Nissan 2007. Big improvements were made with the shock absorbers on the steering front wheel, I bought oil-dampened and air-pressurized ones. We adjusted them just one day before the beginning of the 1-h attempts.
On Friday, I finally had an experience riding Eivie II, that hadn’t have any tendency to fall in resonance. That’s it! My heart screamed of happiness. I made three laps, each time going even faster over the worst spot on the track (the middle of the north-turn). Everything was fine!
On Saturday, we decided to make a 1-h attempt early in the morning. I wanted conditions that were the most favorable to support completing the whole one hour run. My assistants were very helpful, they prepared everything while I could fall asleep. They also used a cart for everything we needed near the bike, that was professional...
The air was thicker, but there was no wind and the morning sun didn’t bother me, because the sun was low in the sky. After 25 minutes, when it looked that I am on the world record pace, a brutal bump made my bike slower immediately. I didn’t know why. I was thinking about quitting, but it seemed that I could still push it fast enough to make some remarkable run. So I continued, despite having a lower motivation. “It was sufficient” I said when volunteers caught me after a full hour. It was a European 1-h record. I felt both satisfied and not satisfied at the same time. At least I didn’t completely wear myself out in the attempt, and was thinking about making another attempt the very next day; the last day of the event. In most instances it is almost impossible to make back-to-back attempts due to the fatigue factor. But, I felt physically strong and thought that I could do it.
We actually fixed all the problems on the bike. The main duty for me was to rest for another day. Anyway, the bike was finally ready at about 2 am, which is when I finally went to sleep.
On Sunday morning, it was very windy. I guessed nobody would complete an hour. White Hawk team aborted the run for example. But just when Fast Freddy and Sam Whittingham were ready to go, wind almost disappeared. Freddy derailed after half an hour, but Sam completed the course, although the wind became stronger at the end of his attempt (up to 15 km/h). Of course, he set the New World Record again at 86,771 km. What a tremendous athlete he is!
My attempt was delayed for 50 minutes due to problems, that wind caused to teams before me. I could go 10 minutes before noon. I chose the time around noon because the sun would be in the highest part of the sky and my ability to see the road conditions would be good. However, the wind conditions got worse and worse every minute. I thought that maybe I would come to the catch area after the very first lap. Our team was well trained, after my cold shower I was ready to go in only 3 minutes. What a surprise! The bike was fast and stable despite the brutal wind! My lap speeds startled me, but at the same time motivated me. I forced myself to try my very best, to see what the bike is able to do. I could see dust devils dancing around the track; it was like in a magic world, bike so perfect, me so very focused on the cracks and lines of the track. I could even avoid the cracks to a certain degree. Suddenly, I got a really bad side wind from the storm. The bike got intense wind-shock that was really scary. It was blowing at a speed of 30 km/h. I knew that they just recorded the fastest 3 laps in history. That made my day! My gosh, I saw even speeds close to 100 km/h on my GPS! I decided to quit very quickly. But I had to make another lap, before volunteers could catch me. My decision was right, because wind pushed me from side very intense couple of times at lower speed again. People from the chase vehicle could see the dust devil touched me slightly, but caught them. I was really happy, in spite of the fact that I didn’t complete 1-hour. My bike was in one piece, and so was I. It had proven itself to be the fastest in the world in those 3 laps. It was only the weather that stopped me from a world record. In my mind, everything is OK. With thoughts for another event, I was smiling and celebrating with my team. I was the second fastest in the event, and it was my best finish on any HPV event so far.
