I got my assistants just few days before WHPSC 2006, asking on the forum for people to help me. Scott Wilson and Mark Anderson were ready to help. I picked up Scott at the Reno, NV airport on the way to Battle Mountain. Mark was already there on Sunday morning when we arrived. My old Honda was proven after good 700 km again. It still could do 30 miles per gallon with the bike on the roof.
The next morning, I had to teach them how to launch me, using my launcher with two wheels. My bike had some technical improvements, but I still had problems. On Monday my steering was too stiff. On Tuesday I fell in resonance at high speed, when I hit a small bump at the beginning of the timing strips. I barely passed the finish line and then crashed. I knew it was close to my own best mark and thank God it was my NEW European record at 119.1 km/h. The desert ground is very dusty, so people who came to my bike to get me out, lifted a lot of that dust making me cough... On the video of my crash I saw my bike was wobbling even before I could feel it inside. I decided to be more careful about that next time. I thought I can prevent it with more focus.
Wednesday, Mark and Scott did great body work on Eivie II’s fairing to make it faster. I supported them with drink (no-alcohol). I was still mentally recovering from the crash. Afraid to crash again, I pedaled very gently. The speed wasn’t bad, and at least I completed very safe run.
On Thursday’s run I found myself in the left lane, where there are no timing strips just before the 200m mark. But I had good speed for my own personal best run. I corrected my direction too abruptly to make a measured run and catch the timing strips. That caused the resonance of bike and me in it again. I only remember that it was impossible to take control of the bike again. I went too close to the shoulder and crashed. I was knocked unconscious for several moments. As a precaution they took me to the hospital. I was OK except for a little mental confusion. I felt like I was wakening up from some sort of deep dream. That was the end of my trials for this year. I wanted to make some changes on my bike to improve stability and then run it very carefully on the last day of event on Saturday. However, Scott and I agreed later that it is better to do it on the next event. Anyway, I placed the third place on the event.
